Living On The Edge!
Letters!

Dear: Mum and Dad!

I am in Tundra now, it's such a wonderful experience! The only thing I can see is dried up land. There are no trees here! It's really cold here even if I am covered in clothes and a really warm jumper! I'm still cold! Well anyways I miss you lots!

  1. Hi Cathy,

It's Leslie here, reading your letter from your trip to the Tundra. I'm a member of the SLJ team and I live in Canada where the tundra is the region in the far north of our country. Your description in your letter to your parents is very good. Certainly the tundra is very dry, even though it's snow covered in the winter, and it tends to be very very cold most of the year.

It's true that anyone who travels through the tundra has to have the right clothing or they'd never survive the cold. There is a brief summer time when the sun shines for 24 hours a day, and the snow disappears. Tiny plants bloom very briefly in the summer but there are no trees or bushes because the growing season is too short. And the insects in the summer are enough to drive people crazy!!! Our first nations people, the Inuit, have lived in the tundra for thousands of years and they know how to survive there. I admire them tremendously.

Are you interested in travelling to cold places in the world? Have you ever been to the mountains on the South Island to see the snow?

I hope you're having nice, warm days during your summer holiday time!! And I hope you're really enjoying the fun of doing your favourite summer time things!

I'll continue to read your blog. You've done so much work on it!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
