Waka Ama 🛶

For The Summer Learning Journey Day 1 Bonus Activity:

Waka Ama looks like a really fun sport. But I don't think I would really want to be in a Waka Ama race because it looks like a lot of fun but at the same time it looks really hard and I think you would need to be pretty strong to be in a Waka Ama team. This I why I wouldn't like to be in a Waka Ama team.

  1. Kia Ora Cathy,

My name is Rachel and I am working with Ruby, Billy, Megan, Cia and Clare on the Summer Learning Journey programme this year. It's awesome to see that you have been posting blogs for the programme, including one today. It's pretty amazing to think that today is the first day of 2018. I hope that you will have a wonderful year at home and at school.

We, at the Summer Learning Journey programme, can't wait to read more of your blogs over the next few weeks. There are 57 more activities for you to try and for you to post answers to on our blog site. I can see from today's post that you wouldn't like to join a Waka Ama race. I can completely understand as it would be pretty difficult, I reckon. You'd need to be really strong and have great endurance.

When I was a young girl growing up in Canada I used to go paddling with my family in a canoe. A canoe is a small waka that only fits 2-4 people. I found paddling a canoe pretty tricky so I can only imagine what it would be like to hop into a waka and try to paddle on the open water...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, Cathy. Keep up the great work!

    Best,
    Rachel :)

  2. Kia ora Cathy,

My name is Megan and I am one of the team blogging with you on the Summer Learning Journey.

It sounds like you have made a clear decision that you do not want to compete in a waka ama race. I agree with you, the sport looks very challenging and would take a lot of training and discipline. However, the amazing thing about this event, is that you work hard with your team and can share your wins and loses together. I think I would love to have a go at waka ama one day and get a sense of what it must have been like for the early settlers who arrived in New Zealand by waka.

Keep up the awesome work Cathy. My team have thoroughly enjoyd reading your posts.

    Have a lovely day
    Megan :)

  3. Hello Cathy,

My name is Toeumu and i am a student in room 3 at Wesley Primary School.
I have seen that you do not want to be in a waka ama race. I disagree i would love to be in a waka ama race because it is worth a try, and you can practice by using teamwork. Good luck on your tasks over the summer/ school holidays.

Have you ever been in a waka race before?

    Have a wonderful day
    Toeumu :)
