RULES!

I think this rule is okay because if tourists damage the area, we definitely need a change! I think there is another solution for this problem. Maybe there could be no limits of how many people come, but this could only be opened on some days!

  1. Hi Cathy,

Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

I agree with you that Peru's decision to limit the number of visitors to Machu Picchu is a good one. The wear and tear on this sacred, ancient site is going to lead to it disappearing one day soon. The more people visiting a site, the more the soil is worn away and the more the stone ruins are worn away as well. There's also always a concern about people bringing rubbish to a site and possibly leaving it there, and people needing to go to the washroom etc. Tourism is wonderful in some respects, but it can also cause problems.

Your suggestion that the site be open on some days and not others is a good possibility - but that still means that the number of visitors overall would be limited. So, you're agreeing with the governments decision, either way.
    And so am I!

I hope you're having a lovely summer day today and I'll continue to enjoy reading your blog.

    Cheers,

    Leslie
